ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• The Clinical Appeals Nurse in Optum will ensure defensible and accurate case recommendations for concurrent admission, continued stay, and concurrent denial cases which are then reviewed by a Physician Advisor for completion of the concurrent and/or peer to peer review. They will be working directly with the Physician Advisors utilizing the guidance provided in order to make defensible and accurate case recommendations.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Ø Performs triage, while considering both physical and psychosocial elements.

Ø Manages basic life support needs and stabilizes patients until the attending physician is available, based upon nursing standards and protocol.

Ø Initiates corrective action whenever information from monitoring equipment shows adverse symptomatology

Ø Records patients' current vital signs

Ø Work directly under physicians, assisting them during exams, diagnostics testing and treatments. Perform minor medical operations with Doctors

Ø Prepares adverse reactions to medications or treatment in accordance with the policy regarding the administration of medications by a license nurse

Ø Maintain Emergency Room care standards. Provides basic, bedside care. Clean wounds and reset bones for patients who enter the Emergency Room

Ø Ensure the efficiency of the patient check-in process

Ø Maintains proper supplies and appropriate medical equipment to care for patients.

Ø Initiates patient education plan, as prescribed by physician

Ø Teaches patients and significant others how to manage their illness /injury, by explaining: post treatment home care needs, diet/nutrition/ exercise programs, self-administration of medication and rehabilitation, as well as provides referrals to other healthcare professionals for follow-up treatment.

Ø Displays professionalism while completing multiple urgent tasks in a timely manner.

Ø Records all care information concisely, accurately and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the appropriate forms

Ø Does other duties that the Management may ask/delegate.

Ø Display strong decision-making skills in emergency scenarios

EDUCATIONAL AND WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Ø Requires bachelor's degree in nursing and must be a Registered Nurse.

Ø Completed Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) / Basic Life Support (BLS)

Ø Relevant work experience and/or internship

REQUIRED SKILLS

· Strong communication skills: Throughout the day you have to relay a lot of information to medical staff and patients. How you communicate with each person is very important. Patients will need less jargon and more explanation, whereas doctors will need concise medical summaries.

· Empathy and understanding: Patients are often nervous and scared, and so are their families. You need a caring and compassionate attitude to be successful as a staff nurse.

· Patience and flexibility: Any number of things can happen during the shift of a staff nurse. You have to adapt to whatever the day brings, and be prepared for quickly changing priorities. Patients are feeling their worst and could be quite irritable. Patience is key.

· Attention to detail: Patients and staff will rely on your ability to be accurate and pay attention. You'll be recording data and working with patient charts, but you also have to pay attention to nonverbal cues by patients. Being attentive to details could save a life.

· Physical endurance: It's no secret that being a staff nurse requires a lot of strength. You will be on your feet most of the day and will also do a lot of bending.

Teamwork: You're part of a team. Your collaborative approach allows you to adapt to changing situations on the fly. This is where strong communication and listening skills come into play.
