Under the supervision of the laboratory supervisor and the chair of the Department of Chemistry, the Licensed Chemical Technician Officer assists in the day-to-day operations of the Chemistry Department. Performs functions as assistant laboratory technician such as assisting in reagent preparation and lab organization, while gaining proficiency in equipment handling and facility maintenance, including duties in support of the technical activities of the department.
DETAIL OF PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
o Assists the lab instructor in the preparations of the requirements of lab class
o Arrange chemicals and simple laboratory apparatus in the stockrooms and the laboratories.
o Assists in minor repairs in areas such as plumbing, carpentry and electrical works of labs and facilities
o Assists in building-related maintenance and security for Chemistry Department-assigned labs and facilities in Schmitt, SEC, CTC buildings, and others
o Maintain the general cleanliness and order of the laboratories and related facilities
o Be trained in basic first aid and/or safety-related matters.
o Interacts professionally with faculty, research assistants, teaching assistants, and students in relation to stockroom transactions.
o Prepare, label, and organize laboratory materials and supplies.
o Clean glassware, equipment, and work areas.
o Replaces gas tanks
o Transports distilled water and other supplies to various labs
o Transports waste to storage area with proper labels and assists in the monitoring of waste storage in coordination with the Safety Officer
o Assists in keeping laboratory areas clean, safe and orderly and reports problems to the Laboratory Manager.
o Ensures that the following utilities: water, gas, air conditioners, and light are turned off and windows closed before leaving Schmitt Hall, SEC, or assigned laboratories and facilities after work.
o Amenable to be trained on new routines and procedures related to Department of Chemistry staff duties
o Support the faculty and staff with Chemistry Department-related tasks as needed
o Knowledgeable with safety and emergency protocols in the lab and assume assigned emergency response tasks
o Reports to the Head of the Technical Staff and the Department of Chemistry Chair and other technical managers assigned to Safety, Laboratories, and Instrumentations
o Follows and provides suggestions for stockroom and other lab SOPs
Education
- Course required by the PRC Licensed Chemical Technician Qualification
Certifications/Licensing
- License holder and/or board passer of the PRC Chemical Technicians Exam is preferred, but not required
Knowledge and Abilities
- Good knowledge of chemistry laboratory practices, computer knowledge for documentation and inventory, good customer service, good interpersonal skills, basic knowledge and skills in carpentry work, plumbing, and repairs.
