The Opportunity

To support our commitment in providing world-class finance services, our Finance Associate will provide support to our Shared Services. This role is based in Philippines. We are looking for a detail-oriented and Mandarin-speaking Finance Associate to join our growing Shared Services team. This role is ideal for finance professionals with experience in Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, or Payroll, who are passionate about delivering high-quality financial services in a dynamic, multicultural environment.

Your role in our team

As a Consultant in the Arup Manila Environmental and Social Team, you will help us to deliver effective and professional services for a range of varied and high-profile clients. While you'll have a level of responsibility from day one, we will give you the chance to take on more as you progress and broaden your skills.

  • Report to and act as a Project Manager and Project Coordinator, and working on a day-to-day basis with the project teams.
  • There is scope for the role to take on a more responsibility for management of people. This will depend on business need.
  • Lead the provision of technical ecological input for a range of large and complex projects primarily across the transport, aviation, energy (renewable energy) and water sectors.
  • Support on the leadership and deliver Environmental and Social projects in the Philippines and support similar projects in Southeast Asia with a focus on ecology. This will involve coordinating people, facilities and resources within tight timelines and in line with budgetary constraints. Provide technical support to drive the growth and direction of Arup's Environmental and Social team in Manila.
  • Provide technical direction and growth opportunities to junior members of the team
  • Support project bidding and business development activities including leading ecology led proposals and providing input to multi-disciplinary proposals
  • Foster and develop key client relationships
  • Accountable for representing Arup in Manila and potentially also regionally where required
  • Engage in opportunities to explore ideas, through research and development, which are believed to make a difference to the Arup community through Arup's internal 'Invest in Arup' or Community Engagement program.
  • Regular contact with other professionals within discipline across the firm.
  • Regular contact with Staffing Group Leaders to plan resources.
  • Regular liaison with Project Manager and Engineers.
  • Regular liaison outside the firm with technical specialists, clients and engineers.

Is this role right for you?

  • Recognised relevant qualifications in Ecological Sciences, Biology (Marine Biology), Forestry, Environmental Science or related discipline (BSc essential, MSc preferred).
  • Relevant industry experience in renewable energy, marine, transport, aviation and/or water infrastructure within a consulting, academic, non-profit or government business environment.
  • 10 + years relevant industry experience in a professional working environment, including in consulting, academic, non-profit or government.
  • 10 + years relevant industry experience undertaking field work in the area of marine and/or freshwater ecology.
  • Experience in delivering projects against multilateral development bank Environmental and Social Safeguards (e.g. International Finance Corporation Performance Standards, Asian Development Bank E&S Framework, Equator Principles etc.) in addition to national standards.
  • Knowledge and understanding of applicability of planning and biodiversity legislation and regulations in the Philippines to renewable energy, transport, aviation and/or water infrastructure projects.
  • Knowledge and understanding of international E&S safeguards (e.g. International Finance Corporation Performance Standards, Asian Development Bank E&S Framework, Equator Principles etc.) relevant to biodiversity, including Critical Habitat Assessment, offsetting and mitigation etc.
  • Knowledge and integration of biodiversity financing and natural capital requirements for projects in the Philippines.
  • Proven working knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, codes of practice, and guidelines
  • Effective communicator who can distil complex ecological matters into client or project outcomes
  • Ability to effectively communicate with people at all levels in both technical and non-technical environments, and form positive and collaborative internal working relationships with other areas of the business
  • Project management, research and analytical skills
  • Preference for a demonstrated interest in ecological initiatives, such as participating in local conservation efforts, community sustainability programs or collaboration with NGOs.

Your role in our team

  • Reporting to a Project Manager and Project Coordinator, and working on a day to day basis with the project teams.
  • Support the team in all E&S assessment aspects, including undertaking of surveys and site investigations/ stakeholder engagements
  • Assist in permit applications and stakeholder issues needed to advance projects
  • Data encoding and analysis of survey results
  • Conduct desk studies, including qualitative and quantitative risk assessments
  • Assist towards both statutory and non-statutory impact assessments, technical reports, environmental strategies, corporate reporting and prepare documents for submission within the planning system
  • Liaise with relevant external parties to ensure understanding of the client's needs and project requirements.
  • There is scope for the role to take on a more responsibility for technical tasks. This will depend on business need.

Is this role right for you?

  • Degree in Environmental Science/ Engineer, or any other relevant related fields; post graduate studies will be an advantage
  • At least 3 years of experience supporting/ undertaking environmental impact assessments / environmental design/ resettlement action plans/ environmental modelling/ public engagements as well as environmental experience with municipalities
  • Familiarity/ experience with modelling or simulation tools/ software is an advantage
  • Familiar with concept on environmental survey/ sampling methodology and stakeholder engagement procedures in the Philippines.
  • Excellent technical writing, analytical, and presentation skills
  • Familiarity with environmental assessment practices in the Philippines
  • Self-starter and team player, able to adaptable and work independently coupled with strong interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency in both written and spoken English and Filipino (Tagalog). Other Filipino dialects are an advantage.

Job Description

  • Lead and support environmental and social (E&S) feasibility studies for energy sector projects (natural gas, LNG to Power, biomass, Waste to Energy, wind, solar, hybrid, etc.) and potential other sectors e.g. infrastructure.
  • Lead and support Environmental and Social Due Diligence (ESDD) studies for energy sector projects and potential other sectors.
  • Lead and support as lenders environmental and social advisor during the construction and operation of energy sector projects and potential other sectors, including supporting consultations with Project Affected Persons and other stakeholders in the Philippines.
  • Perform the role as Project Manager for Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIAs) and the development E&S Management Plans. Provide guidance on environmental matters, including regulatory E&S requirements in the Philippines.
  • Support Clients to develop and implement Environmental and Social Management Systems (ESMS).
  • Contribute to business development by providing strategic advice on environmental and social issues to existing and potential clients, including the preparation of marketing material.
  • Preparation of proposals (technical and financial) for environmental social services.
  • Support other AFRY E&S staff in the region and contribute to work outside of the region when opportunities arise.
  • Enforce ethics and compliance in accordance with AFRY Code of Conduct.

Qualifications

  • Higher professional degree in environmental science, engineering or related field (B.Sc., M.Sc. or Ph.D.).
  • 8+ years' experience in environmental consulting / management.
  • Experience in the preparation of ESIAs and E&S Management Plans for renewable and thermal power projects.
  • Experience in performing ESDD for renewable and thermal power projects.
  • Track record of project managing environmental and social services for renewable and thermal power projects.
  • Knowledge of potential social issues i.e. labor issues, resettlement and livelihood issues would be an advantage, including experience in undertaking stakeholder engagement activities.
  • Knowledge of Philippines regulatory E&S requirements and international E&S standards and guidelines i.e. Equator Principles, IFC Performance Standards, WBG EHS Guidelines, ADB Safeguards etc.
  • The willingness to travel to other countries inside and outside the region to support environmental and social services.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Excellent report writing, presentation and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work well with people from a range of cultures.
  • Ability to work independently.

What will you do?

To provide support in managing client engagements throughout the project lifecycle. Offers a wide array of support to management being the central point of project management, time tracking, invoicing, resource planning, business intelligence, and collaboration tools used by many project teams.

  • Assist in monitoring and reporting of all activities in relation to the Environmental Management Plan (EMP)
  • Act as liaison person with the Project Management team on site.
